Pacific Peoples' Partnership

Canada/Kanata (Huron)

Canada is home to many rich, vibrant cultures, including our First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples who called this land home prior to First Contact. Canada's First Peoples speak many languages, many of which are at risk of becoming extinct.

Beside each proper name of Canada's provinces and territories, we have chosen to use a First Nations, Inuit, or Metis word that roughly translates into English as land or, in some cases, is the word chosen by local First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples.

This in no way excludes languages, but simply reflects our desire to honour the language and culture of Canada's first peoples.

* All the information that was compiled for this research was done in January 2008 and is intended for basic information. Once going to the website there are more incentives offered. Since climate change is so important, provinces are always making updates and new incentives.
